He also served Lafayette as a City Councilor and Mayor from 2018 to 2025. A Career Built Around Community

JD’s career took him from the classroom to City Hall. Alongside teaching, he served Lafayette as a City Councilor and Mayor from 2018 to 2025, bringing his interest in government, civic participation, and public speaking into direct service to his hometown. In 2026, he added author to his professional journey with the publication of his children’s book, Tabansi The Tiger and the Joy of One.

Leading Through Service

For JD, leadership began with participation. Whether teaching students, serving in local government, volunteering, or supporting community organizations, he believed meaningful change grew from people choosing to contribute. His community involvement included leadership with the Empowerment Center of East County, service with Thorne Nature Kids, and co-founding the Rikki Olds Memorial Scholarship.

Life Beyond the Work

Outside the classroom and community work, JD enjoyed competing in basketball, bicycling along Colorado’s trails, exploring parks, watching movies, and traveling. Most importantly, he valued spending time with family and friends and staying connected to the community he called home.
